Electromagnetic Compatibility Test Facility

Although there are other EMC facilities in South Africa, the EMC facility at ISSA offers a unique capability to the industry in terms of the range of testing which can be performed locally. (Other such facilities do exist abroad.) Due to the limited space industry in South Africa, the space related facilities such as the thermal vacuum chamber and satellite integration chamber are used very infrequently. Others such as the Vibration and 3-D Measurement facilities are also utilized but not so extensively.

Key Performance Activities

• The performance of EMC testing for commercial clients.
  
• The development of a capability for the modelling of RF systems for EMC testing in order to support the EMC testing capability.
  
• Setting up a software station for frequency spectrum management at ISSA and supporting DOC with technical research on issues relating to frequency spectrum matters as required.

Current Activities

• Day-to-day RF and EMC tests
  
• Anechoic chamber measurements for IEC-1000-4-3 RS & uncertainty budget.
  
• Perform analyses of RF test systems using the computer modeling package (CST).
